Placencia Food Vendor Complains

50 year old Brenda Muscham, was born in the community of Placencia, and for over 15 years has worked as a food vendor, selling Caribbean style delicacies to locals and tourists alike for Brenda’s Kitchen, a business she started. The food stall is located at the very end of town at the pier, and is even recognized internationally. Trip Advisor wrote an article about Brenda’s kitchen saying quote, “Don’t be taken back by her modest kitchen, we ate there twice and it was the most amazing food we experienced in Placencia.” About 10 years ago she was also on an issue of the Guinness World Record.

But this modest grandmotherly cook is facing some challenges, because according to her, the village council has given her notice that she must move her little kitchen shack.

Through tears she explained her ordeal.

“I started from scratch.  I started from cooking at my house, bringing my food out here, [and] sit over there.  Then I started working my way in.  Then I got my little tent.  I started with a little small barbeque.  I came by the tree, by the beach.  Then I started working myself in.  Now I’m getting international.  People get to know me.

I’m just getting on my feet, when they take the bread out of my mouth.

“So the Village Council has gotten in touch with you, just over the last couple of weeks.”

.

Brenda Muschamp

“They just give me one month, after 15 years I’ve been slaving for my community, and they’re trying to take bread out of my mouth.

It’s hurting me to see how they don’t treat the locals the way they should be treated.   That’s why the foreigners are going to come in here and take this away from us.  They’re taking a diamond.  It’s a soul.  Some of them give their life for the community.”

.

According to Brenda Muscham, the chairman of the village council brought the letter to her a few weeks ago without any prior notice.

“Nobody didn’t talk to me about nothing, they just came on my birthday.  I was having a party.  They came and they gave me a letter and said, ‘Well, this is for you.’   I read the letter and I was totally hurt.

I said, ‘Why are you doing this to me?’

She said, ‘To break this down and put a police Booth here.’

They have just got a brand new Police Station,  You have a lot of around that they could find, but they just don’t want to see the local people prosper in this country.”

“Now did you have another location where they assigned you to?”

.

Brenda Muschamp

“No. They just told me they need me to move in one month, otherwise they’re going to make the law take me away from here.”

.

In the mean time, she said she is trying to see what she will do when that day comes that she must move.

We tried to get in contact with the village council but we were unsuccessful. We will keep following this story.
