PM not worried about Trump’s comments

In his state of the Union address delivered on Tuesday night, American President Donald Trump, once again, made mention of those countries who voted against America’s decision to move its US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital city. Belize, along with 128 other countries, voted against America’s planned move. In his address, Trump said about the countries who voted “no” and we quote,   “ In 2016, American taxpayers generously sent those same countries more than $20 billion dollars in aid. That is why tonight I am asking Congress to pass legislation to help ensure American foreign assistance dollars always serve American interest and only go to friends of American, not enemies of America.”  Today, the media caught up with Prime Minister Dean Barrow and asked him if he was concerned by Trump’s statement.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I am not particularly worried, I think we are friends with the United States, and certainly that it is a friendship that can and will survive that particular vote at the U.N. In terms of CARSI, it is not charity from the U.S. It is a matter of pursuing their strategic interests. And those interests have not changed, cannot change in terms of the circumstances in the region; so again, I’m not worried.”

Journalist:

We know, we agree that it is in their strategic interest but every year Congress has to support for CARSI initiative which benefits both nations. But it does benefit Belize with the various security apparatus we are able to get. Do you think that with the signal from the president that Congress will be more stingy in its disbursement of course of funds?

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

I completely and absolutely doubt that it is what you said at the start. In regards to CARSI, it is not charity from the US. It is a matter of pursuing their strategic interests and those interests have not changed, and cannot change in terms of the circumstances in the region, so again I’m not worried

We agree it is in their strategic interest but every year congress has to CARSI project
