Yesterday Oceana and the Belize Coalition held its World Ocean Day award Ceremony. Prime Minister Dean Barrow was presented with an award in the ceremony entitled “The Way of the Wave”. The sculpture was designed by renowned artist Gilvano Swasey, MBE and sculpted by Anthony Vacaro. It is described as being made from a mahogany spur left by loggers and is representative of the wave of energy demonstrated by the Belizean people and Government that have gotten us to this point. Last year the Barrow administration, with support from the opposition, passed a bill in the National Assembly that temporarily banned any offshore petroleum-related activity within a one-kilometer radius of the Belize Barrier Reef. The bill became law in December.
