Another current national issue has been the murder of Fahreed Ahmad which allegedly occurred at the hands of a police officer. The WPC was charged two days ago and the Ahmad family has since alleged that their family is being targeted and is actually on a hit list. Text messages purportedly from one police officer to another were circulated on social media spelling out police involvement in an alleged hit on Fahreed and his family. Opposition leader John Briceno brought up the matter in the house today.
John Briceno: Opposition leader
Last week or over the weekend we had now a young man, a Muslim Belizean by the name of Fahreed Ahmad who was murdered was shot in his head in his vehicle and it seems that a police officer is implicated in the murder of this well-known and well like young man in his community. I put on record that I have never met Mr. Ahmad I didn’t meet him, but what we’ve been hearing from different people I knew people that knew him well and family members of him and to find out now that just a few hours before he was killed he made a report against the Special Assignment Team of the police or what they refer to as the SAT just to find out a few hours later that it seems now that one of their very own, a police officer is implicated or being accused and she has been charged for murder.
Today, PM Barrow says he has spoken to the lead cop in the matter, Chester Williams, and is satisfied that the investigators will get to the bottom of the matter.
Yes I have seen some text messages. The authenticity of which is being questioned. I spoke personally to Chester Williams who is in charge of the investigation and he was very concerned about the text messages and certainly was determined to get to the bottom of that issue. Just today he provided me with examples of the apps that can be used to create fake text messages and so in his view rarely until we are able to get some sort of a court order that would allow an examination of the relevant appropriate telephone records. He has to suspend judgement and I think that is the position that certainly I have to be guided by, Chester is no doubt in my mind, absolutely determined to comprehensively, to do a comprehensive investigation. He’s determined not for there not to be any slip ups. He’s determined not to cover over anything and so I am satisfied that we’re in good hands with respect to his custody of the investigation.
The PM says that at this time he sees no need for an independent investigation into the murder.
