Police Ballistic Examiner found guilty of abetment to pervert the course of justice

The Belize Police Department’s Ballistic Examiner, Orlando Vera, was found guilty of the offense of abetment to pervert the course of justice. Last Thursday, May 25, Chief Magistrate, Anne Marie Smith heard the case of Vera and reserved her ruling for today. This morning, in a 7 page ruling, the magistrate said that after viewing both sides, she was satisfied that the crown proved all the elements of the offense.  In January 2016, Orlando Vera, was charged with the offense of abetment to pervert the course of justice after he offered to assist Belmopan Businessman, Michael Moderi, who had a gun case pending before the court. Vera told Moderi he could tamper with evidence in order to have Moderi walk free from the gun charge. Vera was remanded to the Belize Central Prison and will be sentenced next week Thursday, June 8, 2017. vlcsnap-2017-06-03-16h16m35s351
