Police had shootout with rape suspects in Dangriga

A 25-year-old woman of Dangriga was reportedly raped on Sunday January 25, 2015. She told police that at about 8:00 p.m. that night, she was along with a friend in his vehicle, whom she had asked to take her to the Benguche Area in Dangriga.

While he was driving on Front Street, Dangriga Town, he made a left turn driving in a Western direction on an unknown street leading to Casa Bridge, and while travelling on the street she heard a banging sound of a rock hitting underneath the vehicle. The driver then stopped the vehicle to make checks and while he was doing so two armed masked men approached the vehicle. The first one was a dark skin man who was armed with a knife, and the other was a fair skinned man who was armed with a hand gun.

The men then ordered the driver  back into the vehicle, where he was instructed to drive the vehicle near the cemetery to where the former Putt Putt bar use to be. When they got there, the driver and the woman were both tied up by the men and both men sodomised the woman.

Due to new legislation, the act of sodomy is now referred to as anal sexual intercourse, so the police report says the men had anal sexual intercourse with the woman, without her consent.

The results of a medical examination conducted on the woman were consistent with the story of forceful sodomy, even though the woman did not report the mater until two days after the incident.

Police have since arrested and charged 22-year-old Robert Taylor of Monument Site Area, Dangriga, with Rape, Aggravated Assault, Theft of Motor Vehicle, Abduction and Robbery, and are seeking Shane Bennett of Dangriga, who is also wanted for “Jewellery Theft” as investigations continue.

.

Late Thursday evening, police issued a press release saying that they had a shootout with Shane Bennet and other men while investigating this incident.

“They secured the vehicle and in doing so another vehicle approached.  In that vehicle were three occupants: Robert Taylor Junior;  Shane Bennett, who exited the vehicle.  The officers immediately identified themselves, and the third occupant pulled out a firearm and fired a single shot in the direction of the officers.

All three then got inside the vehicle, the Trouper, and drove off.  Police set chase, and in the New Site Area two of the occupants, namely Robert Taylor and Shane Bennett, alighted the Trouper, firing at Police Officers, making good their escape in the nearby bushes.

The Trouper then continued under high speed.  Officers  continued their pursuit, and caught up with him, and apprehended  him, where they learned his name to be Rodwell Arzu, a resident of Independence Village.  He was detained and escorted to Dangriga Police Station.”

.

Rodwell Arzu was arrested and charged for “Aggravated Assault” and was taken to the Southern Regional Hospital for treatment.
