The Ministry of National Security today awarded officers for their performance in reducing major crimes during the month of February. The awards went to the Intermediate Southern Formation and the Toledo Formation which both saw a 50% increase in major crimes when compared with last month’s figures. The awards have now become a monthly feature in the Police Department and consist of a $1,000 cash reward for the winning zone and certificates of appreciation for the outstanding formations. The Officer Commanding the entire southern zone, Senior Superintendent Robert Mariano was awarded a cheque of $1,000. While the Officers Commanding the Intermediate Southern Formation – Alton Alvarez and Simeon Alvarez, both received certificates of award……Overall, for the January/ February period of last year, the number of murders was registered at 16. But this year, for the same period, the country saw 21 murders, with Belize city taking the lead. Throughout the country, rapes, robberies, burglaries and thefts all showed a decrease for the comparative period. However, carnal knowledge reports increased from 13 last year to 19 this year for the same period. The district with the most carnal knowledge reports for January and February this year is the Cayo district.
