In more positive news coming out of the Police Department, this week, the crime statistics for the period of January to July were released and it shows a notable decrease in major crimes. The offense that saw the greatest reduction is robbery – last year recorded 302 cases while this year recorded 166, with the Belize District documenting the highest rate at 76. The murder rate countrywide also decreased, totaling 67 cases as compared to last years’ 88 – that’s 21 less homicides. Again, the Belize District recorded the highest rate at 48 cases. And in correlation, the number of shooting incidents decreased from 154 – 118. But the same can’t be said about carnal knowledge, as this year’s rates nearly doubled at 44, compared to 26 documented last year.
