Political Parties Celebrate Anniversaries





Later this week, Belize’s two main political parties are marking the anniversaries of their respective foundations. The United Democratic Party was formed on September 27, 1973 from a merger of three parties, the National Independence Party (NIP), the People’s Development Movement (PDM) and the Liberal Party, along with elements of the United Black Association for Development (UBAD). Two days later in the calendar, but 23 years earlier in time, the People’s United Party was formed after a dissolution of the People’s Committee which had fought devaluation in the then-colony of British Honduras. On Wednesday, the PUP hosted an exhibition at its headquarters, Independence Hall, under the theme “Remembering the Legacy of George Price,” The exhibition continued all day, while the People’s United Party’s actual birthday is Sunday.
