Political parties: Endorsements vs conventions

The People’s United Party has been making a lot of changes recently to their ranks, the last of which was the endorsement of Major Lloyd Jones as the Standard Bearer for Belize Rural North. Just as with the UDP, there have been more endorsements within the PUP of late., without party conventions. Not all their supporters arvlcsnap-2015-05-13-12h16m42s139e pleased, however. In an impassioned article written on Belize Media Group’s website in March, two months after the PUP’s defeat at the Cayo North by elections, Richard Harrison, who was replaced by Michel Chebat as the PUP Standard Bearer in Cayo North, openly criticized the party saying that, quote, “This is the kind of rogue dictatorship that a party which voluntarily suspends its own constitution will provide for…taking away the right of its supporters… to democratically choose their representatives in free, open and fair intra-party conventions.”  Michel Chebat, in a recent interview with Plus TV, responded to this argument.

“If there is a convention or no convention, that’s a matter for the party’s decision. My recollection is that when Mr. Harrison was endorsed,  it was actually an endorsement, there was no convention. You will see from party to party, as you have seen in the last month or so, the current party in government has been changing standard bearers who have been collected at conventions and actually they have even been changing ministers. So while convention is one formula, convention is not the only formula available to the party. At the end of the day, it is a matter for the party to determine how they want to go. in terms of Mr. Harrisons gripe or  feelings, I don’t know what was communicated with him, so I am not in a position to comment on that.”

In related news the People’s United Party sent out a release this morning inviting the media to attend a press conference on Wednesday May 13 where, Plus News understands, they are to endorse their new standard bearer for the Dangriga constituency.
