“No need to go through Congress to change the date of the referendum with Belize” – said President of Guatemala Otto Perez Molina yesterday. The Prensa Libre is reporting that the President has expressed that he hopes they can come to an amicable agreement on the October referendum, with Belize and the OAS in a meeting scheduled for the coming days. Both countries will be heading to Washington to have a sit down with OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza. All indications point to Guatemala seeking a postponement of the referendum. Perez Molina further implied that even if Belize opposes, Guatemala will find a change. “We prefer for it not to be a unilateral decision” he assured.
