Prime Minister hopes to meet with Unions before Budget Debate

Another pressing issue addressed yesterday, was the asked-for salary adjustment by three powerful trade unions, the BNTU, PSU and APSSM. The unions submitted their counter-proposal for the Government last Wednesday and sought a meeting between now and next’s week’s budget debate. Yesterday, the Prime Minister’s response was “no can do.”

Dean Barrow – Prime Minister:
vlcsnap-2013-03-14-20h33m38s151I did answer them.  I did send a formal letter.  I did that the day before I left to go to Houston with Kim.  They were asking for a meeting between the 12th and the 20th.  I was just getting back on the 12th.  We knew we’d have this today.  Ambassador Espat and the FS go to the IDB Meeting in Panama. They leave Thursday.  They are not back until the 20th.  The Budget Debate is the 21st and 22nd.  The next week is the Easter short week.  So I suggested a date right after Easter.  I left the day after sending them the letter.  I don’t know whether they’ve responded to me.  I will probably, if they have, see that when I go to Belmopan today [Thursday].

The actual details of the proposal remain a secret, as neither side was willing to comment.
