Proceeds of a bust handed over to security forces

Proceeds of a bust late last year, now forfeited, were on Tuesday handed over by the Customs and Excise Department to their comrades in the security forces – the Belize Defence Force and Coast Guard. According to the Department’s public relations officer Gilbert Gordon, the total find valued at $49,000 represents what was forfeited by the owners of a vessel in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye following a raid on December 23, 2012 in which some $92,000 of uncustomed goods was found. The BDF, represented at the handover by Lt. Col Steven Ortega, received $12,000 worth of diving equipment and gear while the Coast Guard, headed by Rear Admiral John Borland, received $37,000 of diving equipment and gear. Adm. Borland said their donation would be put to use immediately as the Coast Guard is receiving training in diving from the U.S. Navy Warfare Unit. The BDF according to Ortega, its deputy commander, intends to join in on that training as well.
