About 50 persons participated in a protest in Punta Gorda Town on Saturday. It was held due to the killing of Mario Vernon earlier this month. Vernon was shot in the head on January 13th by a police officer. There have been different versions told of what transpired but the officer’s account is that Vernon was armed and so he fired for fear of his life. Vernon’s family and eyewitnesses claim otherwise, suggesting that Vernon was shot in the head as he had his hands in the air in surrender. The officer has since been charged with manslaughter but the family believes this to be a miscarriage of justice. They believe the officer should have been charged with murder. The protest started at the Central Park in Punta Gorda Town , followed by a procession through the main streets in the center of town and then a rally at the Hollywood Park.
