Public Service Commission Hears Case of Suspended Immigration Workers

vlcsnap-2014-02-06-20h06m47s66Former Minister of State, in the Immigration Department, Elvin Penner continues to enjoy ministerial perks, but while he continues to enjoy the safety of his political affiliation, three Immigration officers, who, some argue, were only following directives from Mr. Elvin Penner, have been suspended facing possible termination.

Today the faith of those three officers: Sharon Neal, Erwin Robinson and Omar Phillips- was put on the table before the Public Service Commissioner at the Administration Building in vlcsnap-2014-02-19-17h31m10s42Belmopan.

The hearing was headed by CEO in the Ministry of Immigration Ms. Candelaria Saldivar and Commissioner Pat Bernard. They refused to comment today.

However, after the proceedings, attorney Oswald Twist who represented two of the public officers- Mr. Erwin Robinson and Mr. Omar Phillips, spoke to the media.  He explains what the allegations against the officers are:

“The report is basic; it involves the passport with Mr. Kim and they say that the officers were negligent in processing the passport.  That is the basic allegation against three of the officers, but we don’t see the allegation as being something serious.  There may have been error in judgment, but not sufficient evidence of the service to have them dismissed from the service…certainly not; my perspective at least”.

Though the Commissioner will give the final verdict, attorney Oswald Twist says that he believes the outcome of that decision will be favourable to his clients.

vlcsnap-2014-02-19-17h41m03s216vlcsnap-2014-02-19-17h39m02s196Mr. Oswald Twist: “The head of the Commission is Mr. Patt Bernard, and Immigration presented their case, the CEO, Mrs. Saldivar along with the only witness that was called, Mrs. Maria Marin.  We were given the opportunity to cross examine her on various issues, and at the end of the day, the Commission will make a decision if they are guilty or innocent, but from a legal standpoint, I believe that we presented a good case, and I think that the eventual outcome will be hearable to our client”.

The immigration officers are now awaiting the decision of the Public Service Commission and will be called when that decision has been made.
