PUP to oppose “Gender Neutral” Rape Bill during Friday’s House Meeting

Two committee meetings were scheduled for Wednesday in the Capital, but only one materialized and that is the Constitution and Foreign Affairs Standing Committee. That gathering started at 3:00 Wednesday afternoon. The Committee is meeting to discuss the Criminal Code Amendment Bill (2), or as it has been dubbed “The Gender Neutral” Bill. Besides from the members of the board, persons who are in attendance at the meeting include representatives from the Bar Association and the Office of the Solicitor General. PlusNews understands that the Bill, in the face of much opposition, is expected to be pushed through at Friday’s meeting of the House of Representatives. The People United Party’s, we are told, will strongly object to the bill.

vlcsnap-2013-10-31-07h50m31s58Hon. Julius Espat: “The Act presently, the People’s United Party will not go ahead on the structure until a complete and detailed analysis is done, based on recent information that has been forwarded to the government, on example being the Bar, Dolores and all of our attorneys say that it is so complete what the Bar Association did in details, that the country does not have the legal mind in two, three days and insert or dissect that in such a short period of time“.

The other meeting that was slated for Wednesday was that of the Public Accounts Committee. Our cameras arrived at the meeting to find a waiting gallery, along with the Hon. Patrick Faber, the Senators from the social body and the summoned witness. After about thirty minutes of hanging around, we were informed by one of the Senators that the meeting was abruptly cancelled. Not in attendance once again were the representatives from the PUP, Chairman Julius Espat and Rodwell Fergusson. We spoke with Mr Espat late Wednesday evening, where he explained his party’s intention going forward.

Hon. Julius Espat: “We are proposing to reconstitute the Public Accounts Committee by increasing the number of member from government to fix.   Leave the Opposition with two ah dehn bring in two ah dehn social partners.   It’s an appeasement, but at the same time it deals with the exact same formula which will lead us to nothing.   But we are counter proposing if they want government with three and leave us with two because that supposedly gives them the ego to say that it is power by majority, well we’re fine with that.   That is power by majority in the political arena!    And then, bring in two social partners.   It is the responsibility of either sides to be able to convince the social partners that what they are doing is good”.

The PAC meeting did not take place because a quorum was not met.
