Refurbished Chetumal Boulevard formally opened

Part one of the redone Chetumal Boulevard which runs through the Belama Phase 1 and 2 boundary to the Haulover Creek was formally opened today even though it will not be opened to traffic until next Monday. Mayor of Belize City Darrell Bradley gives details on the construction of the boulevard.

Darrell Bradley – Belize City Mayor;
vlcsnap-2013-04-17-09h50m01s233This is a project that the City Council conceived several months ago in wanting to wanting to provide greater access and rejuvenation to this area of Belize City.  Of course we hope that the Chetumal Boulevard project does not end here, and we hope that in the future we will be able to source additional funding to continue the Boulevard so that it touches the river, and to lobby for the Bridge Project to be installed, and to continue it along to the Western Highway. I think that this particular thoroughfare is of great importance and significant benefit to residents, including the business community, in this area. It provides a major access-way from the Northern Highway to the Belama community.  It was done a little over three months at a cost of BZ$708,000

Design for the project was done by area resident and engineer Roque Matus. The route is the site of numerous businesses and has been projected as another commercial zone for the City. Plans are in place for a bridge to the Southside and building a basketball arena and international bus terminal along the route.  Area representative Francis Fonseca was in attendance and put political differences aside to congratulate the City Council on their work in his division.

Francis Fonseca – Area Representative:
vlcsnap-2013-04-17-09h58m06s207The new improved Chetumal Boulevard will not only improve the quality of life for the residents of the Belama community,  it will also enhance property values in the area.  It will lessen the wear and tear on motor vehicles, a constant cry we hear from the residents of Belize City.   It will also of course be a nicer walk for our pedestrians, many of our people still walk in the Belama community to come out to catch the bus.  So it will be a more comfortable convenient walk for them.  And in general, the new improved Chetumal Boulevard will serve to improve and enhance the environment of this community, a very beautiful residential community, a growing community that we have invested a lot in, over the past 15 / 20 years.

Speaking of the political divide, Fonseca paid tribute to Mayor Bradley and agreed to work with him.

Francis Fonseca – Area Representative:
vlcsnap-2013-04-17-09h51m21s191It is very rare and very unusual for us to see politicians from different political parties together, sharing the podium, sharing the spotlight if you will.  I believe, and I think the Mayor [believes], because he and i have talked several times and we have remained in communication since he became the Mayor of Belize City. When we first met i said to him, “Mayor, the elections are over.  You are the Mayor of Belize City.  You’re also my Mayor, and I’m going to do everything that I can to support your work, and i mean that.”

The Council has embarked on an aggressive campaign regarding street infrastructure, calling for the resurfacing of 100 streets by the end of this year among other projects.
