Renovation taking place at KHMH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Belmopan Morgue

PlusNews spoke to CEO in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Peter Allen, on several burning issues with the Ministry. We begin with the current status of the KHMH’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which Dr. Allen says is among several sections of the hospital currently being renovated.

Dr. Peter Allen – CEO Ministry of Health:

vlcsnap-2013-07-25-13h12m57s35We are very grateful to the Ministry of Finance for answering our call for al immediate extension of the area that had been used.  You’ll recall the part of the challenge was that the unit was essentially build for 8 neonates, and the number of neonates being housed was a little over 20.  So the space between the different neonate cots was less than it should have been.  The immediate expansion takes that into consideration, and expands the area for the cots and for the babies, and was estimated at just over a hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

The hospital will also receive key human resources from Cuba.

Also, there is the Belmopan morgue, which conditions became national news after a baby switch mix-up reported earlier this year. The Ministry, Dr. Allen told us, has moved swiftly on that issue.

Dr. Peter Allen – CEO Ministry of Health:

vlcsnap-2013-07-25-14h03m55s164It’s still in a horrible condition.  Emergency repairs were made the same week, and estimates were sought from qualified contractors. The estimates are now at the Ministry of Finance.
