Rotoract Week in Belmopan

Several Belmopan Vendors put up stalls at the Parque De Las Americans in the San Martin Area, Belmopan to sell food and clothing during the weekend and sometimes during the week. Several residents in the community also frequent the park whether it’s buy goods or clothes from the vendors or just to socialize. But because the park is so frequented by community residents and vendors alike, garbage has become an issue. It was in light of this that a team of Rotoractors put up two garbage drums and two large garbage awareness signs over weekend.

”Well yesterday was Rotoract day and the Rotoract week was from Monday up to tomorrow, so at the end of the week, we have a project that we need to do and this is our final project for the week. Usually, we notice that people come to sell on Saturdays or sometime during the week right, we noticed that this park needed some garbage drums because the garbage just looks filthy and there is a lot of garbage and plus there is a creek beside it and the garbage just accumulates over there. So we found the need in this park, Parque De Las Americans. We think this is a good idea.

After the signs were erected, the group went on a cleaning drive around the park. Soon after some community residents got inspired and pitched in to assist in picking up garbage.

“You know, why I decided to clean and help to clean is because I see that the cleansing of the city is the health of the country. I decided to clean up because  I believe that when I clean the city, I know that it is health and I like to be healthy.

What do you think about the youths coming out here to clean the environment?”

Manuel Sandoval

It’s very good, it’s a good decision. It’s a good decision they made.  l appreciate the work and they’re doing a good job because, well I don’t know, but I think they are helping to keep the city clean and getting it done.”

The next step according to the Vice President of Rotoravlcsnap-2015-03-19-11h17m44s83ct Belmopan is to try and adopt the park and clean it once or twice a month.
