It was a violent weekend with four murders one of which involves a notorious figure and another which involves two police officers who are detained. We start first with the one in Roaring Creek.
Last week the Hyde family buried their daughter Dorla Pitts, who was murdered, allegedly by her nephew Brian Hyde. Today the family is getting ready to bury their son, 45 year old Russell Hyde Sr., the 6th child of the Hyde children to have been killed. The incident occurred on Friday August 28th sometime around 9:30 pm. Hyde along with 28 year old Marcy Humes, of Roaring Creek Village, and another male companion had reportedly just arrived at Hyde’s farm in Camalote Village, Cayo when they were reportedly ambushed by three armed men. Inspector Stephanie Grinage, Deputy officer in Command of Belmopan Police Station told us more.
Inspector Stephanie Grinage: Deputy O.C. Belmopan: On arrival at the area in a feeder road, at the residence of Mr. Russell Hyde, we observed one female with apparent gunshot wounds to the chest area and the leg. She was transported to the Western Regional Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Her name is Marcy Humes. She was identified as Marcy Humes. A search of the immediate area, we found the body of Russell Hyde apparently dead, so he was transported to the Western Regional Hospital also and he was officially pronounced dead. Like I said, you had a witness that was along with both parties. We still have not located this person but the investigation in that continues in regards to locating this person and finding out what knowledge he has of this crime.
The patriarch of the family recounted what he knows of his son’s death.
Alvin Hyde: Russell Hyde’s father: Well the young man who was with him, which was the third person, I think he gives an information, more or less. He said that when they drove up by the house, he told Russel that he saw three persons in dark clothes coming. He said ,”mek we run “. But Russel neva run , but he [the third man]start to run. After when they must have attacked him then he start to run and they shot him in the backand that’s when they shot both Russel and the young lady. He was shot in the back and it looks like after he drop they went and finished him in his face and the young lady start to screamand then they come and shot the young lady.
Marcy Humes was found with multiple gunshot injuries to the chest and leg area. She was transported to the Western Regional Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries around 10:23 pm. About a hundred yards from her, Russell’s lifeless body was found with multiple gunshot wounds: . one to the lower back, 2 to the right side of the jaw, 1 to the right side of the neck and 1 to the left clavicle area. We asked Superintendent Sinquest Martinez if the authorities believe that this murder case revolves around drugs or is it a case of retaliation. Over the years, Russell Hyde made an infamous name for himself but as notorious as Russell was perceived, police say they are not leaving any space for speculation.
Sup. Sinquest Martinez: Staff Officer CIB Right now we don’t want to make any kind of assumption or any kind of speculation. The investigation is going quite good for us and at least by the end of tomorrow we can tell you what is the actual motive because we don’t want to assume. Yes, we know who this person was but at the end of the day we want to be fair and square, regardless of who he was so that we could bring a complete conclusion for him and his family. We don’t want to make any kind of assumption.
Family members and close associates of Russell Hyde have been killed one by one starting with his common law wife Rosalee Galvez who was killed in early May of this year. A Week later Edilberto Medina, a close associate of Hyde’s and Steven Hyde, Russell’s cousin, turned up dead- gruesomely murdered within days of each other. With this very violent track record is police tightening up security in Roaring Creek in case of a retaliation as is being predicted by some? That’s what we asked Superintendent Sinquest Martinez.
Sup. Sinquest Martinez: Staff Officer CIB Pertaining to Roaring Creek Police Station, we have increased man power and they are currently sitting there. There we have a sergeant in charge of Roaring Creek Police Stationso we will continue do what needs to get done pertaining to when it comes to patrols, the increase of staff. We are looking at even putting out some investigators out there likewise because of the increase of crime within the Cayo South area.
