Second Trial for Murder, but Arturo Eck Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter

vlcsnap-2014-05-20-21h17m09s124A man who was being tried for a second time on murder chose to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in the Orange Walk session of the Supreme Court.

Arturo Ek was accused and charged for the murder of  his uncle, Eugenio Tzul, which occurred in November of 2007. He was convicted of the murder on June 16, 2010 and sentenced to life imprisonment but he appealed and was ordered a retrial.

The retrial started on May 5 of this year, with the empanelling of a 12 member jury.

However on May 7, 2014, the accused decided to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter on the advice of his attorneys.

The victim, 49 year old Eugenio Tzul, was strangled and then sodomized with an antenna. Sentencing for Ek has been deferred to Thursday, May 22, when mitigation will be made on his behalf by his defense attorneys.
