There was a shooting incident in Belize City on Thursday night. 20 year old Aaron Garbutt Jr., a mechanic of Belize City was shot to the right upper thigh and finger. According to police, sometime around 5p.m. on May 12, 2016, Garbutt and another male person were standing at the corner of King and Far West Street, Belize City, when they saw a black 4 door Kia SUV drive up and park about 10 feet away from where they were standing. After about ten minutes, a dark complexioned male person who was wearing a mask exited the back passenger side of the vehicle and fired several shots at them. The vehicle then sped off on King Street in the direction of Euphrates Avenue making good its escape. Garbutt was transported to the K.H.M.H. where he was treated and released. Then at 8:30 p.m. that same Thursday night, 25-year-old Mark Vernon of 8 Miles George Price Highway, was shot to the lower back and the right foot. Vernon was riding his bicycle on Cemetery Road, when he observed what appeared to be the same black pickup as the one in the earlier shooting driving slowly behind him. Vernon stated that he turned left into Euphrates Avenue, where the vehicle continued to follow him. Upon reaching the corner of Euphrates and Cairo Street, the black pickup drove up beside him and several gun shots were fired from the front passenger side window in his direction causing his injuries. The pickup then sped off. Half an hour later, ACP Chester Williams was shot at. According to reports, while ACP Williams was driving on Youth for the Future Drive he heard what sounded like gunshots. He then received information that shots were being fired on Euphrates Avenue from a black Mazda pickup truck. He continued driving and upon reaching the junction of Vernon Street and Magazine Road he heard a transmission on the Police Communication Network to the effect that shots were being fired on Euphrates Avenue from a black pickup truck. Anticipating that the vehicle involved would use Dolphin Street as an escape route, he made his way unto Dolphin Street and upon reaching the intersection with Raccoon Street, he spotted a vehicle fitting the description making a turn from Raccoon Street unto Dolphin Street. He followed the vehicle which then sped off. He pursued the vehicle into Armadillo Street then into an unknown named street into North Creek reaching the “one-man- bridge” that links north Creek and South Creek. The vehicle then came to a stop and one, Zacharia Knox identified by ACP Williams alighted the vehicle with two guns in his hands and pointed it in his direction and fired several shots then ran across the bridge. The vehicle then sped off into Central American Boulevard where it was intercepted by police at the intersection with Fabers Road. Inside the vehicle were the driver 44-year-old Larry Wright of Jane Usher Boulevard, 21-year-old Justin Hyde of Curl Thompson Street and 23-year-old Devon Sankey of Unity Street Belize City. 19-year-old Zacharia Knox of Fabers Road Extension was later apprehended.
