Sex offenders to serve prison terms for incest and rape

In separate cases in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, two alleged sex offenders were adjudged guilty of the offenses of incest and rape. The first case comes from Orange Walk Town, where Isabel Mendez was convicted on Tuesday by a nine-member jury for ten counts of incest, having had intercourse with his victim, aged 12, between May of 2006 and April of 2009. The relation of the victim to Mendez cannot be published, however incest is generally adjudged to have been between close family members and relatives. And in the Court of Appeal, the man infamously accused of being the “Southside Serial Rapist” in Belize City in 2008 was told on Friday that he would have to continue serving a 15 year concurrent jail term for rape and vlcsnap-2013-06-19-18h36m21s54robbery. Leroy Gomez was accused of a string of six rapes and attempted rapes and robberies of women and convicted of at least one, however, that conviction was overturned and he subsequently beat three others before being convicted by a jury before Justice Adolph Lucas in August of 2012. Director Cheryl-Lynn Vidal represented the Crown and Senior Counsel Hubert Elrington defended Gomez in the appeal which was heard on June 11, Tuesday. The judges had reserved the decision until Friday and their reasons in writing would be given at a later date.
