According to police, the individual was apprehended within minutes. Reports had it that police fired a several warning shots at the individual as he attempted to escape, however according to Supt. Howell Gillette, Officer Commanding Belmopan Police Station, no one was injured.
“One Gisselle Garbajal reported that she was walking along the walkway and upon reaching between the Belmopan Comprehensive School and Security Board, she was robbed of her belongings, namely a purse with a Samsung Galaxy Phone inside, valued at BZ$500. Quick police response led to the detention of the Hispanic male minor who we have in custody now and is expected to be charged for the theft of the phone. We also recovered the phone along with the purse”.
Reporter Emanuel Pech: “Sir, can you explain the reason why theft and not robbery”.
Supt. Howell Gillette: “Well, no force was used to retrieve the item from the person or to steal these from the complainant. So, it is a theft rather than a robbery. A police was in the area who saw him running with the purse and the phone, and he was immediately apprehended”.
Reporter Emanuel Pech: “And he was where?”
Supt. Howell Gillette: “In the Oriole Street area”.
The 17 year old minor was arraigned in court earlier this evening and was later remanded to prison.
