Nasley Somerville, former Hospital Administrator for the Southern Regional Hospital was dismissed from the public service after over a year of being placed administrative leave on half pay. That was after being accused of embezzling more than quarter of a million dollars from the hospital’s maternal health care and child care accounts. This was based on a report made by the auditor general. Her dismissal was confirmed on Monday April 20th when she received a letter from the Public Service Commission informing her of their decision. But Somerville is not satisfied with their decision and maintains her innocence. Yesterday her attorney Andrew Bennett told the media that he has received instructions from her client to appeal her case at the Belize advisory council. In an interview with the media yesterday Bennett said that “the Auditor General’s report established that there was some fraud committed on the public funds. But as it relates to implicating Nasley, that was our position throughout this hearing, that there need to have been more. We will be challenging the reasons to say that they are unreasonable not supportably by any of the evidence.” He further stated that the commission did not place any weight on some of the documents that Nasley submitted and explained that they have strong grounds to put before the Belize Advisory council. Somerville has 21 days to submit her appeal. But despite her termination, police, up to date, have not levied any criminal charges.
