Stake Bank Project Passed In the Senate

vlcsnap-2014-02-08-01h31m06s93While yesterday’s Meeting of the Senate saw debate on a number of the bills tabled, there was accord on the Stake Bank Cruise Docking Facility Development Bill, 2014.

The Bill is for the construction of a cruise port to be at Stake Bank.

According to the Government, the idea is to locate the new cruise port there and to build the causeway to Belize City.

The project appears to meet the environmental and economic considerations and is expected to expand the tourism industry and, as a result, provide employment opportunities.

Here is how the dialogue over the bill went at yesterday’s meeting.

vlcsnap-2014-02-08-01h27m53s223Hon. Godwin Hulse- Senator of the UDP and Leader of Government Business

“This project has been in the making for ten years, I understand, and whereas, the promoters are Belizeans (Mr. Mike Feinstein)  and

Whereas they intend to develop an island off the Coast to Belize, known as Stake Bank and build a causeway from Stake Bank to another island called Down Caye and from there to Belize City.  All the environmental studies have been done that show that the causeways are fine.  It will serve as a cruise ship docking facility so that it will eliminate the tendering of passengers to and from ships to Belize City.  Bill was required to give the comfort to the developers, so they can move with dispatch. It is our understanding that they have secured their funding for this project and it should greatly enhance the tourism industry in Belize and indeed, one of the considerations is that it will not disrupt the activity in Belize City and surrounding areas by virtue of  it being established there”.

vlcsnap-2014-02-08-01h41m48s129Hon. Lisa Shoman- Senator of the People’s United Party

“Mr. President, it’s very clear that the intent here is to provide support for a facility that we all know and recognize that in Belize is needed.  There is no question in my mind as to whether the tenders that are used are adequate or not; the time has come and it has been coming for a long time tah twe will have to provide, if we intend to have a cruise tourism industry, we have to provide proper tendering facilities”.

vlcsnap-2014-02-08-01h47m57s87Rev. Noel Leslie- Senator for the Council of Churches

“Mr. President, I commend this special project, the Stake bank docking cruise ship facility development for the country of Belize. I believe that it will be o great move that will provide much needed jobs for the people of this country and it is my hope that all necessary precaution be taken to take care of the environment and to be a very successful venture for our land”.

The bill is also meant  to exempt the developer from taxes and duties.
