Baldachin – B a-l-d-a-c-h-i-n, that’s the word that clinched Sacred Heart R.C. student Eriean Jang as the 2013 National Spelling Bee Champ. Jang competed against eleven of her peers of the Standard 4,5&6 divisions, from schools across the country. This year the competition saw its 19th year under the patronage of Bowen & Bowen Limited’s Coca-Cola. And here is Brand Coordinator Tamara Minto with details.
Tamara Minto – Coca Cola Brand Coordinator:
This has been actually a year of preparation, from last year to this year. We have already started preparing for next year. These 12 kids are incredible. I see everybody’s so emotional. Not everybody can be a winner but the caliber of spellers that we have in Belize has far increased in level. I could actually say that we are on a level of Scripps and maybe Howard. That’s saying that the words these kids are spelling, it is at that high level. We see the level of passion these students have form all over. We have from PG to Belize City, San Pedro and Caye Caulker.
Over 450 students began the zone eliminations back in February and this morning, the twelve finalists squared off for the top three spots. Third place went to Hilda Saki from St. Benedict R.C. in the Toledo District, while second place went to Britney Rosalez from Caledonia R.C. School in Corozal. Britney was overcome by emotion, as she fought back tears of joy, when we chatted with her following the competition.
Britney Rosalez – 2nd Place, Caledonia RC:
Well, I’m very glad I won second place. I never thought I would do it.
[My friends] loved me, congratulated me. I’d like to give thanks to them for helping me.
[My advise to those who intend to participate next year is] to just keep on studying. I never thought I would do it, and they can too.
Meanwhile, first place champ Eriean Jang, of the Stann Creek District said that today’s win wasn’t just a win for her, but one for her classmates and school.
Eirean Jang – 1st Place, Sacred Heart RC:
Baldachin. I didn’t know it [before]. That was the first start that I had, but I just prayed that the second one, because I wasn’t sure.
I feel very honoured.
Every day I have to study. Before I was coming I study as well.
The National Spelling Finals ran simultaneously with the poster competition, whose winner was Caledonia R.C. The theme for this year’s spelling competition was “Keep Smiling and Spelling Belize.”
