We have heard the news that as of January 1, 2016, Plantation White Sugar will retail at a maximum price of 75 cents per pound countrywide. A Statutory Instrument was signed by the Minister responsible for Supplies Control dated December 4th, 2015 to give effect to this increase. This represents an increase of 25 cents per pound and the increase is as a result of GOB giving sugar cane farmers an opportunity to earn a fair price in comparison to other producers in the region. But while the increase is slated for January 1, 2016, there are some shop keepers who have already begun to raise the price of the sugar on their shelves., and this is illegal. Government issue a warning that those shop keepers already adjusting the sugar prices should desist from doing so. Failure to comply with the Supplies Control Price Regulations will result in imprisonment for a term not exceeding six (6) months, a fine of one thousand dollars ($1000.00), or to both imprisonment and fine.
