Taxis collide near Northern border; one person injured

There was an accident near the northern border late Thursday night. According to reports, two passenger taxi vans collided near the Las Vegas Casino, on a curve on the Phillip Goldson Highway.At around 8:30 p.m., 49 year old Belizean taxi driver of San Joaquin Village Delmiro Correa and his wife Martha Correa were driving towards the Immigration Departure area of the Northern Border in their 2002 Grey Mercury Van. In another  vehicle, a Toyota van, was 29 year old Chan Chen resident and Belizean taxi driver Victor Maldonado who was traveling in the opposite direction. Maldonado’s vehicle collided into the right side of Correa’s vehicle. Reports are that Victor Maldonado fled the scene but later handed himself over to police today and was served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution. Maldonado might be facing charges on two counts of negligence, driving without due care and attention and failure to report a traffic accident. The only person hurt in the incident was Martha Correa who sustained minor injuries and complained of pain to her body. She was transported to the Corozal Community hospital.
