The Belmopan Market is on the move again. On May of 2013, the Tuesday and Friday Market vendors were relocated from the old Civic Center to the Agriculture and Show Grounds with plans to move them back to the Civic, when renovations are completed. The plan to move them so far from the heart of the town was met with much opposition.
Nevertheless, the market vendors had no other option but to do as they were told. The Civic Center renovation is not completed as yet but the vendors were relocated into the heart of Belmopan again and they appear to be very pleased with the City Council’s decision.
The new location is behind the Brodies Shopping Center parking lot.
“They are fixing in the center by the Social Security right now. After that, we are going over there”.
Reporter Emanuel Pech: “How is business here in comparison to the Agriculture Showgrounds?”
Market Vendor 1: “Well, the first day is kind of good yeah, it is looking good”.
Reporter Emanuel Pech: “Are you looking forward to moving back to the Civic?”
Market Vendor 1: “Yes”
Reporter Emanuel Pech: “Do you think it will be better?”.
Market Vendor 1: “Yeah, well, it will be better. Over there it is the center, because people from other places pass over there and they go to buy veggies.”
Market Vendor 2: “Fuh we it is difficult. Those people did not know why they come out over there and why dehn no tell us mek we move, but the thing is that right now, we hav fuh come around and circle around fuh find the space. Weh paat we ahn stay. So, right now it is hard for us”.
Market Vendor 3: “Well we no mih like it because we have to deh up and dong, bring things, care things and any time we cohn tudeh 3:00 a.m., dehn tell we we have to wait and lotta pipl deh crazy, yu nuoa, crazy ting tudeh. Well now, after we settle down and we find out fuh we spot and we put up fuh we business, pipl start fuh come and come and now we see the difference, oh yes, much better”.
We also spoke to some shoppers who told us that they too are in agreement with this decision and say this what should have been done in the first place.
“I think that that is the best thing that they are doing. I think this they was…do that when we were in they were moving the people from the market. But I don’t know why wait fuh dat, you know? This is more close for everybody”.
A part from being an inconvenience to regular commuters, it may pose a threat to primary school students crossing the street.
But the move is just a temporary one as according to the information from City Council, the Market Vendors will only be there until May 31st, 2014; after which they will be moved back to the newly renovated Civic Center.
