Police have charged three Belize City men with the murder of 32 year old Harrison Smith.
On Friday night, October 3, around 8:00 p.m. Harrison Smith, of Police Street, Belize City, and 23 year old Eustace Lewis of West Collet Canal were shot at by two men riding on separate bicycles, coming at them from both Pickstock Street against the flow of traffic and North Front Street.
Harrison Smith died from his injuries, multiple gunshot wounds to the body, and Eustace Lewis is recovering from a shot to the buttock area.
Seven 9mm expended shells were recovered.
26 year old Bart Lucas of Belize City; 26 year old Daniel Cain of Belize City, and 18 year old Oscar Flores also of Belize City were read murder charges before Chief Magistrate Ann-Marie Smith on Monday morning. They are also jointly charged with use of deadly means of harm and wounding, while Daniel Cain is separately charged with aggravated assault and professing to belong to a criminal gang.
However, family members of Bart Lucas say police have the wrong man, and they have evidence that they say proves it. We spoke to Lucas’ sister, Neomi Lucas, this morning after Bart Lucas’ arraignment.
“He has been charged with murder. We have him on the security camera at Chon Sing Restaurant, from 7:38 p.m. right up until a little bit past 9 p.m., when the police came and rounded them up from the restaurant itself.
They say that they have a witness testimony. That’s what the police are saying, that they have a witness testimony. With a witness testimony, that is sufficient for them to lay the murder charge.
I fully believe in his innocence.”
Ms. Lucas says authorities have so far refused to look at the security footage, but according to press officer Raphael Martinez, if it has a role in the investigation the Department will take it into account.
“I am pretty sure that Police will leave no stone unturned. I’m sure that if that is one [piece] of evidence that would prove whether or not he was indeed a part of the gunmen, or the persons who fired shots, then that will definitely be looked upon, by the people investigating this latest shooting incident.”
Bart Lucas, Daniel Cain and Oscar Flores are remanded until November 6.
