The next three traffic accidents that we report on last night occurred on the same highway in a 30 hour span.
On Saturday around 4:00 a.m, an elderly man, not identified by police, was struck by a vehicle and knocked down and killed around Mile 2 1/2 on the Philip Goldson Highway. Meanwhile, the following morning, two cars collided between miles 9 and 10 on the Phillip Goldson highway, involving five individuals, two of whom are minors. Only two persons were reported to have sustained injuries, while both vehicles were extensively damaged. That same day, Police were called out to yet another accident scene between miles 76 and 77 on the Phillip Goldson Highway in the Corozal District.
There, they saw 65 year old Eliodoro Gutierrez lying on the road, on top of a Purple Beach Cruiser Bicycle, with a cut wound to his left eyebrow and complaining of pain to his back. Also seen to the left side of the highway, some 5 feet away, was a Green 4door Toyota Hilux with which had a broken front grill. Initial Investigations revealed that the driver of the Toyota Hilux, a Chinese Belizean businessman of Belmopan, was heading to Corozal town when Gutierrez was riding a Bicycle in same direction.
As the vehicle got closer to the bicycle Gutierrez reportedly took a sudden left turn as to cross the highway; as a result the Green Hilux braked and swerved but still hit the bicycle. Gutierrez was transported to the Corozal Community Hospital and later transferred to the KHMH. Meanwhile, the driver of the Hilux was detained pending charges for traffic offenses.
