Tourism Minister unafraid of death threats

Several weeks ago it was reported that Minister Manuel Heredia Jr and Mayor of San Pedro Town Daniel Guerrero were threatened with their lives after making a public call for greater law enforcement presence on the island after a rash of murders and other criminal activity. Increased police presence has been established with both elected officials according to the San Pedro Sun newspaper. Today the Minister made his first public statement on the matter, revealing that the threat was of a personal nature, but reiterating that he is not afraid.

Manuel Heredia Jr. – Minister of Tourism

“Investigation are still ongoing. To me personally I think it was just to intimidate…an intimidation. I know that they found that it came from a certain phone. They interrogated the young lady. Apparently she had left her phone somewhere at work and somebody had taken it. But the investigation is still ongoing but at this point I must say that I still believe that Belize is a free country and a very safe country to walk around, and I will continue to live a normal life as before.”

“But at that point did you fear for your life?”

Manuel Heredia Jr.

“Well I always believe in God and I believe that when he is ready for me, no matter what I do he will take me with him.”

“How was the threat made?”

Manuel Heredia Jr.

“The threat was made via a phone call that was received by my daughter which stated that there was some arrest during those times with a certain family that is also friendly with me. It was a female voice which said that these people were arrested and the Mayor and I have not lifted a finger to get them out of jail. So don’t be surprised if by the following day we are not alive. That is what was in the phone call.”
