“A resident of San Isidro village of the Toledo District is, as a result of a road traffic accident that occurred on the weekend on the Southern Highway. The victim has been identified a Jose Santos Chirino, a naturalized Belizean who was a Special Police Constable and a mechanic by profession. Independence police reported that on Saturday December 14th, shortly after 8:00 a.m., Chirino, who was on his way home on his motorcycle, was accidentally hit from behind by a Toyota HILUX pick-up truck that was traveling in the same direction. The incident occurred between mile 44 and 45 in Bella Vista village while Chirino was approaching a speed bump. Police further indicated that as a consequence of the impact, Chirino sustained head and body injuries and reportedly died on the spot. He was transported to the Independence Polyclinic where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was later taken to the Southern Regional Hospital morgue where it awaits a post mortem examination. The driver of the vehicle, 21 year old Albert Cruz, who was trapped inside the vehicle, is hospitalized at the Belize Medical Associates due to injuries to his legs. Preliminary investigation revealed that Cruz was speeding and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol which caused him to lose control of the vehicle which caused the accident. Police say they will charge Cruz for manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, and refusal to provide urine and blood samples for analysis. He is currently under police guard at the said medical facility”.
