HARRY ARZU – Dangriga Correspondent:
Reports here say that they were heading to Tikal, Guatemala, when they departed just before dawn this morning from Hamanasi resort located in Hopkins Village in the Stann Creek District, But their trip was cut short on reaching Mile 10 on the Stann Creek Valley Read when they got into a frightening traffic accident. Eyewitness here say that about 4:30 this morning, in the said area near Pomona Village, the driver of a tow-head truck, which was loaded with bags of cement destined for Creative Tiles Business here in Dangriga, and who was traveling all the way from Corozal District, was entering into a feeder road to make checks on the vehicle. While doing so a grey Toyota van, which was transporting some six tourists to Guatemala, was traveling in a western direction. However, upon reaching Mile 10 on the said highway the driver of the van, Emiliano Chuc, lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the mid-section of the trailer of the truck, and went partially underneath the trailer. The impact was so horrific that Choc was trapped inside the van, until, he could have been forcefully taken out and rushed to the Southern Regional Hospital, where he underwent surgery for the injuries he sustained. The six tourists, who were shaken up, received minor injuries, were observed and treated. The truck driver at the time of the accident was Belmar Williams. He was more shaken up than anything else. Police continue their investigation. The van is extensively damaged.
