A tragic boat accident has left one woman dead. According to police reports, at approximately 5:00 a.m. on Thursday June 1, 44 year old Acita Flores, along with 8 other persons, left Sarteneja Village, Corozal in a white and blue 24 ft. skiff for a fun day to shop in Calderitas Village and Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico. They got to their destination without any hiccups; however, they ran into trouble on their way back as the sea had become rough, which caused their boat to capsize . Flores was travelling along with her daughter whom she ensured was safe as they floated in the water through the night, unfortunately, Lopez went under water at some point and perished. Those in the village learnt of the desperate situation and gathered a search party which went looking for the boat passengers at 4:30 a.m. on Friday June 2. The search party found eight survivors with the exception of Flores. They were taken to the Corozal Community Hospital where they were treated for various injuries and dehydration. Flores’ body was not discovered until two days later, on Sunday, June 4. It was found floating in the sea about ½ mile north of Consejo Village, Corozal District. The body was transported to the Corozal Hospital where it was pronounced dead at 7:52 p.m. on June 4. A post mortem examination was conducted on the body certifying the cause of death as consistent with drowning.
