Police have arrested and charged two persons in connection with the half a million dollar scam from the Treasury Department in Belize City. Last week Prime Minister Dean Barrow confirmed that some $500 thousand dollars was taken from the Public Treasury at the Central Bank Building in the old Capitol. Police launched an extensive investigation into the matter and have since arrested and charged 28 year old David Enriquez, of Belize City, for two counts of theft, and 39 year old Octaviana Lopez of Dangriga Town, for the crime of Handling Stolen Goods. So, how was it done? Well according to police investigations, Enriquez unlawfully diverting three separate sums of money intended as monthly subventions for the Toledo Community College (TCC) located on the San Antonio Road. On January 12, 2015, some $47,638 was diverted to an account at the Belize Bank branch in Dangriga, Stann Creek District. It happened again two weeks later on January 28, this time for a value of $225, 296. The third count allegedly took place on March 14, 2014, for the same amount as the second count – $225,296. In all cases the monies were allegedly withdrawn personally by Enriquez from the Belize Bank account. As it relates to the second accused Octaviana Lopez, police report that on March 14th earlier this year, $225,296 dollars and 97 cents set aside for the Toledo Community College as a monthly subvention was transferred to a Belize Bank account under the name Octaviana Lopez. The monies were reportedly withdrawn Belize Bank Account at the Dangriga Branch over a period of time. David Enriquez appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann Marie Smith earlier today, represented by defence attorney Oscar Selgado. No plea was taken as the matter will be tried on indictment. Enriquez was denied bail and was remanded into custody until the 4th of June. Octavia Lopez was arraigned yesterday at the Dangriga Magistrates court. She was also denied bail and has been remanded into custody until June 10th. Information reaching Plus News is that Dangriga police have arrested and charged another individual Hazan Palacio in connection with the same investigation. He is to be arraigned on Monday April 27th.
