Trio arraigned for unlicensed firearm and ammo

Henry Gillett , also known as “Pulu”, is on remand tonight following a house raid that police conducted on Tuesday.  Officers attached to Strike Team North conducted a house search on Brides Alley where 36 year old Henry Gillette was present along with his wife, 38 year old Sandra Gillette and a 16 year old minor. Police say they found a Girsan brand 9 mm pistol along with fourteen rounds of ammunition.  Police formally arrested and charged, Henry Gillette, Sandra Gillette , and the minor for  kept firearm without gun license and kept ammunition without a gun license. The trio has been in police custody since New Years’ day and they were taken for arraignment yesterday, but errors on their court book caused another delay until today.    In court today,  all three pleaded not guilty to the charges.   Usually, on offenses related to gun, accused persons are remanded to custody pending Supreme Court bail, but there are special reasons that can get one out on bail.   Attorney Kareem Musa made a submission that Sandra Gillett and the minor ought not to be remanded.  The prosecution raised no objection and so Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford granted both bail in the sum of $5,000 each, which they were able to meet. As for Henry Gillett, he was remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until April 4, 2018.    He is expected to be taken back to court as early as this Friday, January 6, 2018 for his bail application to be heard.
