In the span of nearly 72 hours, two Belize City men died as a result of gunfire and a third lies wounded in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
When we left you on Wednesday night 21 year old Ian Adolphus, who had sustained injuries to the chest, shoulder and elbow after being shot while walking on Freedom Street by an approaching gunman on a bicycle was recovering in hospital. However, he died around 4:35 on Thursday morning while undergoing treatment.
A post-mortem examination has confirmed the cause of death as “vascular shock due to internal bleeding as a result of gunshot wounds.”
The second incident took place around 1:30 Thursday afternoon at a scrap vehicle yard on Cedar Street in Belize City, where 29 year old Herbert Bodden, also known as “Herby” of a Tibruce Street address, was shot while on the job.
Herbert Bodden makes a living cutting up old vehicles for scrap metal to sell. He was working on a vehicle in the yard when, for no apparent reason, he was shot multiple times in the chest and upper body by a gunman who, it is alleged, had just been shot at moments before by another armed man who came to the scrap yard.
As we understand it, Herbert Bodden was working when an individual known as ‘Alex’ came to the yard and was talking to someone there when an assailant arrived and began shooting at him. ‘Alex’ escaped and the frustrated gunman turned his fire on Mr Bodden, who had nothing to do with the incident.
Herbert Bodden was shot and then after falling to the ground received several more wounds from the frustrated triggerman, who then fled the scene.
Mr Bodden was pronounced dead on arrival at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Police are investigating and on Friday officer in charge of Precinct 1 Police Superintendent David Chi announced that police had made a detention in connection with the case.
“On yesterday’s date about in the afternoon hours, police visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital again, where they saw the body of one Herbert Bodden, 29 years old, resident of Belize City, suffering from numerous gunshots wounds to the body. Investigations reveal that sometime yesterday afternoon whilst in the vicinity of Cedar Street, he was accosted by some male persons where one of them fired shots at him causing his demise.
We have somebody in custody as we speak. I won’t reveal his name at this moment, but we have somebody in custody as of concern in respect to that investigation. Again, it’s a young investigation and we continue to follow up all leads in respect to that investigation.”
On Friday morning around 7:30, a resident of Wagner’s Lane off South Street, Belize City, 37 year old Marlon Budran, was targeted by two armed men who shot him in the head and right instep. We hear more from Precinct 1 O.C. Supt. David Chi.
