Two persons died in a traffic accident in Belmopan, and a 24 year old man has been charged with manslaughter by negligence and driving with alcohol level above the prescribed limit.
The accident happened on Saturday February 7 at about 2:00a.m., on the Hummingbird Highway between Mile 54 and 55 . 24-year-old Daniel Cunil of Belmopan City, was driving a Mitsubishi Galant Car from the direction of Belmopan, when it collided with a motorcycle travelling in the opposite direction.
Inspector Stephanie Grinage, Deputy Officer Commanding Belmopan Police Station, told us what police have gathered so far.
“On 7th February, Belmopan Police received information of a traffic accident, between mile 54 and 55 on the Hummingbird Highway. Upon arrival, they observed a motorcycle and a car extensively damage. Also there were two male persons at the location, apparently dead.
26-year-old Leonardo Ramos of Salvapan Area,Belmopan, was driving the motor cycle and his passenger was 17-year-old Rigoberto Leon Cabrera of San Martin Area, Belmopan. Both Leonardo Ramos and Rigoberto Cabrera sustained severe head and body injuries and died on the spot.
According to the sister of Leonardo Ramos, who spoke to us off camera, the family was getting ready to celebrate their mother’s birthday on the same day of the accident.
“That day we did not sleep because we were waiting for him. Since around about 8 on Friday he come out. [Usually] by 9 he is in his house, going to sleep already. That day he never came back.
My brother called him and talked to him. He told my brother he was coming home, [and] not to worry because he was not drinking.
It’s hard right now because he left two kids, one from four years that was going to be five years this Saturday, and the other one just completed on year in December.
We wanted to do something for my mom’s birthday, because the same day he passed away it was my mom’s birthday. A day before, I went shopping, [and] I bought her things, because we wanted to give her something. I still have them in my room, [but] we don’t want to give it to her, because she will remember what happened.”
The grieving father of Rigoberto Cabrera also spoke to us about his son’s last moments.
[Translated] “The news of my son came as a surprise to me, and I felt bad. I felt like I had died. So because I was far away, I got on the road without knowing what had happened.
I’ve always been someone that fights for myself, but first and foremost for my children, and now I have lost half of my life.
It’s a feeling I have never felt before, and to anyone who has children I’m advising them to take care of them.”
Police have since arrested and charged 24 year old Daniel Cunil for the crimes of two counts of “Manslaughter by Negligence”, two counts of “Causing Death by Careless Conduct”, “Driving motor vehicle without due care and attention” and “Driving with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit”.
Daniel Cunil was arraigned on Monday February 9, and was offered bail in the sum of $10,000 dollars plus two sureties. His case resumes on the 5th of March 2015.
