The University of Belize is less than three weeks before final examinations and for some student’s the stakes are high. Around this time of the school year, police always get reports of bomb threats that would momentarily freeze the entire school system.
This year was no different. Some minutes after 9:00 am the University of Belize in Belmopan received a bomb threat forcing teachers, staff and students to evacuate the premises.
Though this is the ideal time of the year to make fake bomb threats, the bomb squad arrived within 15 minutes of the phone call and locked down the whole institution. Minutes before noon, the bomb squad gave the clearance.
Though the whole operation took just three hours, office of public information’s Nectaly Vela told us it is three hours that the University will never get back, “Work has to be paused for staff and lecturers have to find ways of recuperating the time lost as we are only 2 weeks and days away from final exam.”
According to Vela, the university’s Math Club also lost some money as food and essentials were already bought for a planned Math Symposium, which had to be cancelled today.
