Uncle and nephew critical following Saturday shooting

vlcsnap-2013-06-03-19h38m05s187Police say they seek two suspects in relation to a Saturday night shooting in Belize City. Around 7:20 p.m. Saturday 44 year old Melvin Baptist and his nephew 24 year old Arthur Baptist were watching an NBA playoff basketball game inside the older man’s barbershop on Neal’s Pen Road. That is when two gunmen arrived on separate bicycles and fired toward the establishment with 9mm firearms. Melvin Baptist was hit to the back of the head, the bullet coming out just above his eye, and Arthur Baptist to the left side of his head, causing him to fall off the stool. A relative told PLUS News that Arthur Baptist had just sent his daughter inside the house after cooking and was seated on a low stool inside the barbershop when their vlcsnap-2013-06-03-19h38m38s6assailants showed up and Melvin Baptist was seen running outside covered in blood while family members discovered Arthur lying on the floor of the establishment. They were taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where doctors gave Arthur just a 10% chance to live initially, but he survived the weekend although still not out of danger due to a slow heartbeat. The shooting took place in the same area as a shooting on Commonwealth Monday, May 27, and reports are that this shooting was intended as possible retaliation for that incident. We understand that one of the suspects in that incident is related to Arthur and Melvin Baptist. Police are seeking two culprits in connection with this latest shooting.
