Over 130 adolescent girls and women from across the country came together for a Conference For Life. The first time event hosted by the newly formed United Christian Women’s Alliance Belize underscored on the topic of abortion. Speakers presented on the legal, spiritual, medical, social and modern perspectives of the issue.
In Job chapter 33 verse 4, it says, ‘The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.’ If God chose to give life to the unborn, who are we to take that [life]. Life only comes from God. It only comes from God.
Randa Williams – Medical Doctor:
From week 8 onwards, what happens to the fetus is that it starts to grow, but more so in length and in weight, because everything else has been formed prior to this stage. All the organs have already been formed. The blood is already circulating. The heart is already beating at that point. I will not tell you that there are not some pregnancies that don’t have risk. Indeed there are pregnancies that have risks. I will not lie to you and say that’s not the case. It is the truth. However, my firm belief is that if God gave you that pregnancy, then He knows why, and if He did not wish for it to come to pass, then He also knows what He will do about it.
Andrea McCkoy – Attorney At Law:
So is abortion legal in Belize? Is illegal in Belize? Ask yourself, because sometimes, and I think in this case to answer that question, we have to define abortion. So you have to look at what is provided for? What is an offence? And what are all the exceptions? So I think abortion is illegal in Belize, but that legal definition has some mind-blowing exceptions. For my part; because the law provides that we can do an abortion, if you have two Medical Practitioners certifying risk to health, risk to mental and physical health; I would call on Medical Practitioners, ‘You know what? If you want to carry out these abortions, sign your name.’ Sign your name, and maybe that’s why it’s not happening up front. Maybe that’s why it’s happening in back alleys, because who would say, ‘I have checked this person out, and this person can never recover from this pregnancy because they have such a mental trauma, and so I’m signing my name, to say that this person is too poor, too unhealthy.’
