The University of Belize hosted a health fair today. The initiative was that of the Faculty of Nursing which collaborated with a team from the United States.
The team of medical professionals and university lecturers and students offered information on diet, diseases, and other health related issues to those in attendance. Free tests including eye exams, hypertension and diabetes checks were offered. We spoke to one of the University lecturers who told us more about the event.
UB Lecturer: “We had a team that came from Body and Soul Ministries. What usually has been the trend from 2012, was that e had collaborated with body and Soul Ministries to take our students to our clinic who would then have first hand experience. We started with Pharmacy Students and we have been taking them there to work side by side with the U.S. Medical teams which used to come to Body and Soul. This year, we decided to take a different approach. The Faculty of Nursing along with Health and Social Works, through the management of Mrs. Castillo…we discussed and she gave us the permission tat yes, the Faculty can discuss with the team to bring them on board right there on campus to provide services”.
”Through this initiative, the services that we are providing first of all, is the eye examination where they examine people and see if they require some reading glasses and those who have had their reading glasses and they need a replacement. Secondly, there are those people which might have required some medical testing-that is medical laboratory testing for their system like blood and etc. then, the other service was the dispensing of medications and counsel our patients on its proper use”.
