UWI holds Scholarship Fundraising Banquet

UVIFinding financing for college can sometimes be a difficult task, but one accredited university plans to provide a more feasible way for students to pursue their studies. The University of the West Indies Open Campus will be hosting its first ever Scholarship Gala Fundraising Banquet on August 31st. All proceeds from this event and similar efforts to follow will go toward a scholarship fund for deserving Belizeans wishing to attend the University’s open campus. Cynthia Ellis-Topsey, Alumni of UWI stopped by our studios last week to promote the event.

Cynthia Ellis-Topsey – UWI Alumni:

vlcsnap-2013-08-20-10h49m10s27It’s a formal event.  We will have dinner and dancing.  We have a guest speaker.  Our keynote speaker is Doctor Kendrick Leslie.  We will have the presence of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, as well as Doctor Colville Young who is our Patron for the event.  The Chief Justice is the Lead Director of our Planning Committee, with the President being Mr Paco Smith.  A door  prize is going to be available for those who attend.  [The door prize is] a night for two at the Windy Hill Resort.

Cynthia Topsey shared with us just why the university saw it necessary to undertake such an initiative.

Cynthia Ellis-Topsey – UWI Alumni:

It’s very important to help students who cannot afford to attend the University’s facilities, and it’s also a chance for us to build relationships.  [It’s] a call out for Alumni to be more involved in the activities of the University, and building collaborations and linkages with the community.

Tickets can be purchased at $100 from the UWI Open Campus or the UWI Alumni Association. If you can’t attend the Gala, but want to contribute to the scholarship fund, again, you can do so by contacting the university or its alumni group.
