Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was laid to rest today in a state funeral. Friends and families of the late president, along with world leaders, dignitaries and thousands of mourners, gathered in Caracas, to bid farewell to Venezuela’s “El Comandante.” Inside the funeral hall, presidents, including Cuba’s Raul Castro and Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took turns to stand guard over the flag-draped coffin. . Belize’s delegation included Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega and ambassadors Nestor Mendez and Alexis Rosado. Outside the funeral hall, supporters of Chavez’s socialist party lined the streets, where military bands led a sea of red parade, as others viewed the service on large monitors. It has been reported that the body of the Hugo Chavez will not be buried immediately, but will instead lie in state for another seven days. Chavez’s hand-picked successor, Vice President Nicolas Maduro will act as Venezuela’s President. Meanwhile, the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Belize has extended an invitation to the general public, for a memorial mass in honor of the late president. The ceremony will be held next week Friday at 3pm at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral Church in Belmopan.
