Verdes to face Mexico and Panama in Champions League

On Monday evening in Miami, Florida, Belize’s Premier League champions Verdes FC of Benque Viejo learned their opponents in the 2014-15 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League. Verdes won the national title in May and were selected with the best overall record in the season with 10 of 17 wins and 33 points – though this is one less than Police United on 34 points. “The Green Machine” are drawn in Group C with San Francisco F.C. of Panama and Queretaro F.C. of Mexico. Of the 24 clubs participating 12 are drawn from Central America, nine from the U.S., Canada and Mexico and three from the Caribbean.  Queretaro finished ninth on aggregate in the Mexican League and runners-up in the 2015 Clausura tournament of the Mexican League, winning one of the four spots available to Mexico in the tournament. Brazilian star midfielder Rondaldinho plays for the Gallos Blancos.  San Francisco, known as The Monks, are nine-time Panamanian champions and won one of Panama’s two berths in the tournament as the 2014 open season champion. Verdes’ PLB closing season title is their first but they have been one of Belize’s top teams for decades and have the most appearance at regional level in Central American and CONCACAF club tournaments. The tournament begins in August and the final will be played over two legs in April.
