Vernon family upset by “manslaughter” charge

The family of Mario Vernon who was shot and killed last Saturday night in Punta Gorda by a cop, is upset over the charge that has been levied against the officer. Police  say that on the directive of the DPP, they charged 23 year old PC Tevin Aranda for “Manslaughter” . The family believes that Aranda should have been charged with “murder” . The family says that witnesses have given an account that the officer shot Vernon to the head while he had both hands in the air in surrender after the cops had been looking for him. However,  police say that  PC Aranda was chasing Vernon because he was seen with a gun. During the chase, Vernon allegedly pointed a gun at the officer who fired a shot in fear for his life. That shot hit Vernon to the head.  Aranda was arraigned in the Dangriga Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was offered bail of ten thousand dollars. He is to return to court on April 16, 2018.
